Lyon chooses Flowbird for the implementation of its new progressive parking policy

The city of Lyon is once again at the forefront of urban mobility innovation with the launch of a progressive parking pricing project. The city has chosen Flowbird to deploy this groundbreaking initiative, the first of its kind in France. This project heralds a new era in on-street parking management and demonstrates Lyon’s commitment to mobility transition.

What does progressive parking pricing mean?

Progressive parking pricing is an innovative approach that aims to align parking fees with the overall environmental impact and public space usage of vehicles. Unlike traditional pricing systems, which apply uniform rates to all vehicles, this innovative project considers criteria such as vehicle engine type and weight to determine parking fees. The pricing scheme also takes into account the financial and familial situations of Lyon residents for greater social equity.

With Flowbird Hub, Lyon pushes the boundaries of parking policy

Flowbird solutions enable the implementation of parking policies that align with the environmental and social values championed by local territories. As a result, Flowbird emerged as the ideal partner for the project led by the city of Lyon.

Thanks to the centralized management platform – Flowbird Hub – the technical characteristics of vehicles are automatically taken into account in the pricing calculation for each parking ticket purchase. This is facilitated via a connection to the French Ministry of the Interior’s Vehicle Registration System (SIV). This data ‘feed’ allows the city to define a vehicle pricing policy by considering technical characteristics such as vehicle category, engine type (electric, hybrid, or combustion), and unladen weight. The city can thus encourage the use of electric vehicles, reasonably weighted vehicles, etc., on its streets.

On April 8th, Flowbird took the first step in implementing this innovative project by offering an online pricing simulator on the city of Lyon’s website. This tool allows users to calculate parking prices based on their vehicle type, by entering their license plate number. Residents can provide license plate details and specific social criteria defined by the city of Lyon to receive a personalized estimate of their future subscription price. This new pricing scheme, which combines both ecological and societal criteria, was deployed on June 11, 2024, in Lyon and will improve the sharing of public space, align with overall health policies, and help address the climate emergency.
